Something that really interests me is the current trend surrounding all things
'fang' related. You only have to look at the phenomenal successful of the
'Twilight Saga',
True Blood &
The Vampire Diaries, to see that the world really has gone crazy for all things vamp! The interesting thing is all these films/programmes have been a hit. Not one flop between them!
So why then, are we all
so obsessed with the un-dead??!!
This new wave of the vampire craze differs quite significantly to the 'old school' bloodsuckers of yesteryear. The new age vamps are much more urban, they've adapted and have such, blended with society. Their fangs are less conspicuous and they can come out in daylight hours - whether that be using 'magical' rings as they do in
The Vampire Diaries, or captivating glittery skin like the
Cullens. However far fetched, these new 'features' give storylines an intriguing twist and a fresh
bite!

| Bite Me! The new age bad boy vamps! |
Of course, we have to entertain the thought that the success of these programmes derives from the simple fact that all women like a bad boy. Admittedly, these pale skinned bad lads have evolved massively from the early 90s, "I want to drink your blood" stereotypes.
Edward,
Bill and
Stefen have such an appeal because they literally have it all! They're the good guy that loves the girl and wants to save the world from evil at any cost; but at the same time they have that evil/mysterious streak that gives them that desirable 'swoon' factor. That, plus the fact that they're unbeatably strong, immortal and never age a day past their chiseled good looks, makes them the perfect heart-throb for any writer's plot.
To sum up, I suppose the dark, romance of these stories encapsulates audiences, allowing the characters to push boundaries that cannot be broken in 'real life' society. Escapism can be attributed significantly to the success of such media, with people looking for a window into another world to flee the boredom of their own monotonous routine. Like any fad, the vamps will soon be laid to rest once more, but whilst writers continue to hook audiences with their nail biting scripts, these
fang-tastic programmes will be around for some time to come! :[
